Mission back to top

Port City Playhouse's mission is to produce top-quality thought-provoking plays within a diverse community that are either outside of the usual community theatre repertoire or are of significant historical or human importance*.

History back to top

In 1977, a group of Alexandrians recognized the lack of innovative theatre in the community and set out to fill that void by founding Port City Playhouse. Over the last three decades, Port City productions have appeared throughout Alexandria at the former Puppet Theatre on King Street, Minnie Howard School, TC Williams Career Center, George Washington Masonic National Memorial, The Lee Center for the Performing Arts, and most recently, at the Lab at Convergence.

As we near our 40th year, Port City Playhouse is entering a period of reinvention. We have left Alexandria and have moved further inland to a new performance venue and to fresh opportunities to reach new audiences. Port City is embarking on an exciting partnership with Sleepy Hollow United Methodist Church to bring our productions of top-quality, thought-provoking plays to a even larger and more diverse community. Together, we hope to build on Port City's longstanding reputation for staging plays that are outside of the usual community theatre repertoire and/or that are of significant historical or human importance.

Sleepy Hollow UMC is located at 3435 Sleepy Hollow Road between Columbia Pike and Rte. 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the Falls Church section of Eastern Fairfax County.  It is easily reached from Arlington, Falls Church city, Annandale and Fairfax, as well as Alexandria. If you're a longtime friend of Port City, we look forward to welcoming you to our new home.  If you're unfamiliar with Port City--or with live theater in general--we look forward to meeting you!
